ABSTRACT

The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship among competitive state anxiety with performance, and along with variables – somatic anxiety, cognitive anxiety and self-confidence. Thirty participants of final sprint events of all India Inter-University Athletic meet were selected, which was held at Guntoor (Acharya Nagarjuna University) Andhra Pradesh, 2004. The age of the subjects ranged between 19 to 25 years. The Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 (CSAI-2) by Rainer Marten was selected for the study because it is a sports specific anxiety test. Further it assesses competitive anxiety on the basis of three dimension anxiety i.e., cognitive anxiety, somatic anxiety and self-confidence. To determine the relationship between competitive state anxiety and the performance of male sprinters of inter university participants with sub-variables somatic anxiety, cognitive anxiety and self-confidence with the sprinters performance Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation was employed. The level of confidence was set at 0.05 levels. The attribution variable i.e. somatic anxiety (r = 0.712) was significantly related with the performance at 0.05 level of significance, since the obtained value of co-efficient correlation is greater than the Tabulated value (r = 0.361). The attribution variable i.e.; cognitive anxiety (r = 0.224) was insignificantly related with the performance at 0.05 level of significance since the obtained value of coefficient correlation is less than the Tabulated value (r = 0.361). The attribution variable i.e. self confidence (r = 0.559) was significantly related with the performance at 0.05 level of significance since the obtained value of coefficient correlation is greater than the Tabulated value (r = 0.361). the attribution variable i.e. total competitive state anxiety (r = 0.578) show significantly relationship with the performance at 0.05 level since the obtained value of coefficient correlation is greater than the Tabulated value required to be significant is 0.361 at 0.05 level. The competitive state anxiety was contributing factor to performance. Somatic anxiety was having impact on performance. Cognitive anxiety was not having impact on performance. Self-confidence was having impact on performance

Key words: Anxiety, Cognitive Anxiety, Somatic Anxiety and Self-Confidence.
