AN ASSESSMENT AND COMPARISON OF DEPRESSION BETWEEN RURAL AND URBAN HOSPITAL PERSONNEL

ABSTRACT

The purpose of the study was to assess and compare depression between Rural and Urban Hospital Personnel. Fifty subjects (twenty five rural and twenty five urban hospital personnel) were selected randomly from rural (P.H.C. Pindra and Trilochan) and urban (Apex hospital, Sundarpur and S.S.Lal hospital, B.H.U.) area of Varanasi. The age of the subjects were ranged from 18 to 60 years. Goldberg Depression Questionnaire (GDQ) was used to assess the Depression level which was constructed and standardized by Ivan Goldberg. The data was analyzed by applying Descriptive Statistics (Mean, Standard Deviation) and One- sample T- test technique to assess and Compare the level of depression between Rural and Urban Hospital Personnel. The level of significance was set at 0.05. Insignificant difference was found between Rural and Urban Hospital Personnel in relation to Depression, as obtained T-ratio was 0.7401, which was lower than the tabulated value of 2.00, at 0.05 level with (1, 48) degree of freedom. Insignificant difference was found between rural and urban hospital personnel from Varanasi in relation to depression. Rural hospital personnel possessed greater/higher depression in comparison to urban hospital personnel.
