Abstract

Injuries are associated with sportspersons since the inception of sports. Furthermore, the various types of injuries have affected the sports performance and threatened careers of many National and International players. Although, western medicine has made notable advances in the treatment of sports injuries, the dissipation of this knowledge in all countries has not taken place, and India is no exception. In view of this situation, a systematic investigation was carried out to assess the efficacy of ayurvedic methods i.e. Panchkarma (Purvakarma- Snehan & Svedan) to cure some of the most common injuries (injuries to muscles and joints) occurring in sportspersons of handball. The specific treatments used were, Patra Pind Sved, Nadi Sved, Snehan, Svedan using Nirgundi Patra, Eranda Patra, Dashmul and Mahanarayan Oil  as medicine. The treatment period was 30 mins. per day for a total of 3 days. The choice of treatment was based on the type of injury sustained by the players. The effect of treatment was evaluated statistically on the basis of collected data. The results obtained in this study indicated that Snehan & Swedan treatment had a significant (P<0.05) positive impact in relieving the players from pains that occurred while playing. In particular, the Snehan & Swedan treatment had a significant positive impact in improving the flexibility, power and endurance of sportspersons of different games. From the study results, it may be concluded that the Panchkarma treatment is a valid option for treating injuries of sports professionals.
